About My Blog & Me

Hello, and thanks for reading my blog.

First, a little bit about me - my name is Belinda. I'm a mother of two lovely children, Em born in 2003, and Ed born in 2006. I'm also a qualified Kindergarten Teacher and, since having my children, have found a new part-time career as a freelance writer.

This blog started after I had written a few articles about play ideas and hosted a series of segments for a TV program (which you can watch by clicking on the You Tube link on the right). I realised I had so much more to say about the wonderful benefits of free, open-ended, child-led play and so 'everyday play' was born.

Why the name? Well, I believe children should play every single day. It's as natural to children and as important for development as eating, drinking and sleeping. I also chose the name because of the fascination children have with 'everyday' items. Toys are very important to play and development it's true, but children seem to be naturally drawn to what comes from the everyday environment. I find it so rewarding to nurture this as a parent and through my work, I hope to inspire others to do this too.

If you would like to read more of my work, you can visit the Practical Parenting website. If you would like to share some of your experiences or get some extra help with some play ideas for your house, please feel free to drop me a line. I'm available for help with developmental concerns, play ideas or behavioural issues. If you live in Adelaide or Melbourne, I'm even available to meet and offer some one on one advice for a small fee. I would love to hear from you, email me at belinda.butler@optusnet.com.au

In the meantime, happy playing!

Belinda
